Gum Disease (Gingivitis): What You Need to Know.

Gingivitis, commonly known as gum disease, is a widespread condition – especially in adults – but it can affect people of all ages. What makes it particularly concerning is that it often develops slowly and without pain, meaning many patients don’t realise they have it until it has progressed and their teeth are at risk.

At Promenade Dental, we can detect early signs of gum disease during your routine check-ups and treat it before it leads to more serious issues.

What Causes Gum Disease?

The primary cause of gum disease is plaque and tartar build-up from inadequate brushing and flossing. This build-up allows harmful bacteria to irritate and inflame the gums. Additional contributing factors include:

  • A high-sugar or high-carbohydrate diet.
  • Crooked or overcrowded teeth that are hard to clean.
  • Smoking slows healing and increases risk.
  • Chronic stress can weaken the immune system.
  • Medical conditions like diabetes.
  • Certain medications (e.g. contraceptives, heart medication, antidepressants).

If untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more advanced form of gum disease. This can cause the gums to recede, lead to infection deeper in the tissues, and ultimately result in bone loss and tooth loss.

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

When diagnosed early, gum disease can often be reversed. Treatment may include:

  • Professional cleaning and scaling to remove plaque and tartar.
  • Advice on daily oral hygiene habits.
  • Use of antibacterial mouth rinses.
  • In deeper cases, a local anaesthetic may be used for a more thorough clean.
  • For severe or persistent cases, referral to a periodontal specialist may be necessary.

Regular check-ups and hygienist visits are essential for keeping your gums healthy.

Preventing Gum Disease at Home

You can protect your gums and prevent gingivitis by:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, including along the gumline.
  • Flossing daily and using interdental brushes to clean between teeth.
  • Avoiding tobacco products.
  • Eating a balanced, low-sugar diet.
  • Managing any medical conditions (e.g. diabetes) with the help of your GP.

At Promenade Dental, we’re here to help you maintain a healthy mouth and prevent gum disease before it starts.
